Best Time for Desert Safari Dubai: Month-by-Month Guide (2026)

Best Time for Desert Safari Dubai: Month-by-Month Guide (2026)

When's the best time for a desert safari in Dubai? Short answer: November to March for cool weather and clear skies, and evening departures (3 PM - 9 PM) if you want the full programme — dune bashing at sunset, BBQ dinner, live shows. If you'd rather skip the heat and crowds, a morning desert safari is the better pick almost any month of the year.

We run safaris year-round, so here's what each season actually looks like from the driver's seat — and which time of day suits which traveller.

Dubai's desert climate — the basics

Dubai has two modes: hot and very hot. Summer (June-September) regularly hits 45°C in the open desert, and the sand itself can burn through thin shoes. Winter (November-March) drops to a comfortable 20-30°C during the day, with evenings cooling to 15-18°C — cool enough that you'll want a light layer by 8 PM.

The temperature swing between day and night catches people off guard. Even in December, midday sun feels warm, but by sunset it's jacket weather. Our guide on managing heat during your desert safari covers what to expect in detail.

November to March — the sweet spot

This is prime desert safari season, and for good reason. Temperatures hover between 20-30°C, humidity is low, and the wind is light. You can do every activity — dune bashing on Lahbab's red dunes, sandboarding, camel riding, quad biking — without cutting anything short because of heat.

Here's how the months break down:

  • November: Crowds are still building. Temperatures around 25-30°C during the day. One of our favourite months to run safaris — the light at sunset is incredible and the camps aren't packed yet.
  • December & January: Peak season. Expect 20-25°C days and 15°C evenings. Book at least a week ahead — we regularly sell out on weekends. This is also when the BBQ dinner under the stars feels best because the cool air makes sitting outside genuinely pleasant.
  • February & March: Still excellent. Temperatures start climbing in late March (28-32°C), but mornings and evenings are comfortable. February coincides with Dubai Food Festival, so you can pair your desert trip with the city's best dining.

During these months, our Desert Safari Dubai package is the most popular — it's the full 6-7 hour evening experience with dune bashing, camel ride, live shows, and BBQ dinner. If you want VIP seating and a smaller group, the Premium Desert Safari Dubai is the upgrade. Couples often pair this with our romantic desert safari guide for planning ideas.

October & April — shoulder season deals

These two months are underrated. Temperatures sit around 30-35°C, which is warm but manageable — especially after 4 PM when things cool down fast. The big advantage? Fewer tourists, shorter wait times, and better availability.

October still feels like summer until the last week or so. April is the opposite — summer creeping in. Either way, if you're booking an evening safari (which most people do), you'll barely notice the difference from peak season once the sun starts dropping.

Shoulder season is also great for self-drive experiences. The 2 Seater Dune Buggy Dubai is ideal for couples, while the 4 Seater Dune Buggy Dubai fits the whole family. Early morning and late afternoon sessions mean you're riding in golden light without the midday heat. Check our 2-seater vs 4-seater comparison guide for details.

May to September — summer safaris

I won't sugarcoat it: summer in the desert is brutal. Daytime temps regularly hit 45°C+, and the sand holds that heat. That said, we still run safaris every day — and there are real perks to visiting in summer:

  • Prices drop significantly across the board
  • You'll practically have the desert to yourself — no crowds, no waiting
  • Evening temperatures (after 5 PM) settle around 35-38°C, which is hot but doable
  • Sunsets last longer in summer, so the golden hour photography window stretches out

If you're visiting in summer, you have two sensible options. Either book an evening departure after 3:30 PM so you reach the dunes (around 4:30 PM) once the worst heat has broken — our Desert Safari Dubai evening schedule is timed exactly for this — or skip the heat entirely with our Morning Desert Safari Dubai, which finishes before 10 AM. Most summer travellers don't realise the morning option exists; the full morning desert safari breakdown covers timing, what's included, and why it's the smart summer pick.

Summer is also surprisingly good for quad biking — the open-air ride creates its own breeze, and with smaller groups, you get more time on the dunes.

Best time of day for your desert safari

This question gets asked almost as much as "which month" — so here's the honest breakdown by time slot.

Morning safaris (6 AM - 10 AM): Cooler air, softer light, smaller groups. You'll get the desert almost to yourself before the afternoon crowds show up. Great for photography and for people who don't want to be out past dinner. Falconry and Arabic coffee are quieter and feel more authentic in the morning. The morning safari cultural experience goes deeper on the Bedouin programme. For the bookable version, the Morning Desert Safari Dubai is the package to look at.

Evening safaris (3 PM - 9 PM): This is the slot most people book. You get the full package: dune bashing at golden hour, sunset over the red dunes, live shows (Tanoura, belly dance, fire performance), and BBQ dinner. The flip side is that camps are busier — especially Friday and Saturday evenings. If you're comparing packages, our breakdown of standard vs premium shows which tier suits which traveller.

Sunrise safaris: A smaller subset of morning safaris that start earlier, around 5 AM, to catch the sun rising over the dunes. Honestly the best photography window of the day. Read our sunrise safari guide for what to expect and when it's actually worth the early alarm.

Overnight safaris: Sleep in the desert after the evening programme winds down. The silence at 2 AM is something else — just wind and stars. Sunrise in the dunes is worth the early wake-up. These fill up fast in winter, so book ahead. Our overnight desert safari guide covers tent setups, what to bring, and which months work best.

Best months for each activity

Dune bashing

November to February is ideal. The cooler air means your driver can keep the windows cracked, you feel the speed more, and the sand is firmer for sharper turns. In summer, vehicles run AC full blast with windows up — still fun, but a different vibe. For first-timers, our beginner's dune bashing in Dubai guide walks through what actually happens during the ride and what to expect, and red dune bashing on Lahbab's dunes covers the specific location we use.

Sandboarding

Winter only, if you can help it. Trudging uphill in 40°C+ heat isn't fun, and the sand is too hot to sit on. In December or January, you can do 8-10 runs before getting tired. Summer, maybe 3-4 before you're done.

Camel riding

Year-round during morning and evening hours. The camels handle heat better than we do — they're made for it. But you'll enjoy the ride more when you're not squinting into the sun. Our camel riding guide for first-timers covers everything you need to know.

Dune buggy rides

October to March for longer sessions. In summer, operators shorten ride times because of heat exposure in open buggies. Winter lets you do the full 60-minute session comfortably. Families should consider the 4 Seater Dune Buggy — it fits up to 4 people and no driving licence is needed.

Quad biking

Works well year-round for shorter sessions (30 min). The Desert Safari with Quad Bike combo is popular because you get the quad ride before sunset, then the full evening safari after. Compare quad bikes to buggies in our buggy vs quad bike guide.

Dubai events worth timing your trip around

  • Dubai Shopping Festival (Dec-Jan): Discounts across the city, fireworks on NYE. Combine a safari with shopping — just expect peak pricing and full camps.
  • Dubai Food Festival (Feb-Mar): If you're already here for the food scene, add a desert safari for the BBQ dinner contrast. Read about the full camp dinner menu.
  • Ramadan (dates shift yearly): Safaris still run, and some camps offer special Iftar dinners at sunset. It's a genuinely unique experience — the fast-breaking meal in the open desert has an atmosphere you won't find at any restaurant.

What to wear by season

Quick version: light layers, closed shoes, and sunglasses always. Winter evenings need a jacket — temperatures drop 10-15°C after sunset. Summer means the lightest, most breathable clothes you own, SPF 50, and a hat. Our complete desert safari packing guide breaks it down by month.

Booking tips that actually help

  • December-February: Book 5-7 days ahead, especially for weekend safaris. We fill up.
  • Summer: Same-day booking usually works for evening safaris, but morning slots still go fast.
  • Pick your operator carefully. TripAdvisor reviews from the last 3 months are more useful than overall ratings. We cover what to look for in our desert safari safety guide.
  • Weather check: Sandstorms are rare but real. If the forecast shows high winds, contact your operator — they'll reschedule for free.
  • Closed-toe shoes, sunscreen, and water even for evening safaris. You're still in a desert.
