Yes — and the reason it works is narrower than most people expect. It only fits if you take the half-day city tour. The 8-hour full day doesn't combine with an evening safari at all, and it's worth understanding why before you book anything.
The timing conflict nobody mentions
Our evening desert safari picks up between 2:00 PM and 3:00 PM from October to March, and between 2:30 PM and 3:30 PM from April to September. You're back at your hotel around 9:00–9:30 PM in winter, a little later in summer.
The full-day city tour runs eight hours and drops you back between 4:00 PM and 5:00 PM. Your safari driver would have left an hour or two earlier. There's no version of that day that works, and anyone who tells you otherwise is going to cut one of the two short.
The half day is four hours with a morning start. Picked up around 9 AM, you're done by about 1 PM — which leaves an hour or so before the safari pickup. That's the whole trick.
What the day looks like
9:00 AM — Old Dubai. Al Fahidi Historic District first, while it's still cool enough to walk it. The lanes are narrow and shaded, and at that hour you'll mostly have them to yourself.
Around 10:00 AM — across the Creek. The abra costs AED 1 per person, cash only, and it's still the best-value thing in the city. Then the Gold Souk and the Spice Souk on the far bank.
Around 11:30 AM — Downtown. On the half day this is a drive-through past the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall rather than a stop. If standing at the base of the tower matters to you, that's an argument for the full day on a separate date, not for squeezing it in here.
About 1:00 PM — back at your hotel. Eat something, shower, change into loose clothes.
2:00–3:00 PM — the safari picks you up. Dune bashing in the red dunes first, then the camp: camel ride, sandboarding, henna, the BBQ dinner, and the tanoura and fire shows after dark.
9:00–9:30 PM — home.
Be honest with yourself about the length
That's roughly twelve hours out. You're walking souks in the morning heat and then getting thrown around in a 4x4 in the afternoon. Some people love it. Others are done by the fire show and wish they'd split it across two days.
We'd say skip the combined day if:
- You're travelling with kids under about six. The safari alone is a long evening for them.
- You get motion sick. Dune bashing after a morning on your feet is a rough combination.
- You arrived in Dubai that morning. Jet lag plus twelve hours is not a good first day.
If any of those apply, do the city tour one day and the safari the next. Both are better for it.
Practical things that matter
Bring a change of clothes. You will have sand on you. Not a lot, but enough that you won't want to sit in the same shirt through dinner. There's a washroom at the Lahbab meeting point and toilets at every camp. Our guide to what to wear covers the rest.
The gap is real but tight. An hour and a bit is enough to eat and change. It isn't enough to also fit in the Dubai Frame or an aquarium ticket. Don't plan anything into it.

What it costs
Booked as one day, the private vehicle and driver-guide is AED 1,449 for up to six guests, and the evening safari is added per person on top — AED 120 each at the standard camp. Two of you come to AED 1,689 all in. A group of seven needs a second vehicle.
Booked separately instead, the half-day city tour is AED 999 for the vehicle and the safari is the same per-person price. The single booking buys you matched pickups rather than a discount.
The city tour half is priced per vehicle rather than per head, so a family of four splits one private car in the morning and only pays per person for the desert half.
Which one to drop, if you only have time for one
Take the safari. The city tour shows you a city you can also see on your own with a metro card and a day of patience. The desert is two hours out of town, needs a 4x4 and a driver who knows the dunes, and it's the part of the trip people actually talk about afterwards.
But if it's July and you're not sure you can face the heat twice in a day, invert that — do the full-day city tour with its afternoon start, catch sunset at Palm Jumeirah and the fountain show, and save the desert for a cooler morning.
