Desert Safari Dubai for Teenagers: 5 Activities They Actually Love (2026)

Desert Safari Dubai for Teenagers: 5 Activities They Actually Love (2026)

We take a lot of families with teenagers on desert safaris, and the feedback we hear most is: "I didn't think my teen would put their phone down, but they did." Dune bashing gets the adrenaline going, sandboarding gives them something to film, and the camel ride is the one photo every teen actually posts. Here's a breakdown of the five activities that work best for the 12-17 age group, based on what we've seen running these trips daily.

Before you head out, have a look at our guide on what to wear -- closed-toe shoes matter more than you'd think, especially for sandboarding.

1. Red Dune Bashing (Ages 12+, Seatbelts Required)

This is the one that sells teenagers on the whole trip. You're in a Toyota Land Cruiser with a trained driver who's done this thousands of times, climbing 60-degree red sand dunes at Lahbab and then dropping down the other side. The ride lasts about 30-45 minutes, and it genuinely feels like a roller coaster with no track. Most teens want to go again immediately.

A few things parents ask about: yes, seatbelts are mandatory. The drivers adjust intensity based on who's in the car -- if you've got a nervous 12-year-old and a thrill-seeking 16-year-old, just tell the driver and he'll find a middle ground. Motion sickness is real for some people, so skip heavy meals beforehand. We've written a detailed guide to red dune bashing that covers what to expect minute by minute.

Both our standard desert safari and premium desert safari include dune bashing -- the premium option gives you a longer session and a less crowded vehicle.

2. Sandboarding (All Ages, No Experience Needed)

Sandboarding is basically snowboarding minus the snow, the cold, and the lift tickets. You get a waxed board, hike up a dune (that's the workout), and slide down. The sand at Lahbab is finer than regular beach sand, so you get decent speed without it feeling dangerous.

Teens who skateboard or snowboard pick it up in one run. Everyone else takes two or three tries. Nobody's judging -- half the fun is wiping out and getting sand everywhere. It's also the activity that generates the most TikTok-worthy content, so your teen will probably ask to do it multiple times.

One practical note: sand gets into everything. Pockets, shoes, hair. It's part of the deal. For more on the activity itself, see our sandboarding guide.

3. Camel Riding (All Ages, ~15 Minutes)

Camel rides during a desert safari last about 15-20 minutes. The camel handler walks alongside you the entire time, so there's no steering involved. The tricky part is when the camel stands up -- it lurches forward and then backward, and most teenagers let out a surprised yelp the first time. After that, it's a steady walk through the dunes.

Honest take: teenagers under 14 tend to love it. Older teens (15-17) sometimes find it slow compared to dune bashing. But everyone wants the photo. Camels can carry riders up to about 90-100kg, and the handlers are used to nervous first-timers. Our first-timer's camel riding guide covers getting on, getting off, and getting the best photos.

4. Live Entertainment at the Desert Camp

After the outdoor activities wrap up around 6:30-7:00 PM, you head to the desert camp for the evening portion. The entertainment lineup typically includes:

  • Tanoura dance -- a spinning performance where the dancer's layered skirt creates patterns under UV lights. Teens find this genuinely impressive; most have never seen anything like it
  • Belly dancing -- a traditional Arabic performance, usually about 10-15 minutes
  • Fire show -- fire spinning and eating, which predictably gets every teenager's attention
  • Henna painting -- optional, free, and popular with teenage girls (and some boys). Takes about 10 minutes for a hand design

While shows run, you can also try shisha (18+ only), get photos in traditional Arabic clothing, or just sit and watch the stars come out. We've put together a full breakdown in our guide to desert camp entertainment.

5. BBQ Dinner Under the Stars

Dinner at the camp is an open-air buffet that starts around 7:30 PM. The spread usually includes grilled lamb and chicken, beef kebabs, hummus, fattoush, biryani rice, fresh bread from a tandoor oven, and a dessert station. There are vegetarian options and most camps can handle common dietary restrictions if you mention them when booking.

Teenagers eat. A lot. The buffet is unlimited, so nobody leaves hungry. The setting is what makes it different from a regular restaurant -- you're eating at low tables on carpets and cushions, with the open desert around you and no city lights. It's quieter than you'd expect. Our BBQ dinner guide has the full menu breakdown and photos.

Bonus: Add-On Adventures for Teens 16+

If your teenager is 16 or older and wants something beyond the standard safari activities, there are two solid add-ons:

  • Quad biking -- 30 or 60 minutes on an ATV across open desert, with a guide leading the group. It's the most popular add-on for teens. Check out our quad bike experience or the safari + quad bike combo
  • Self-drive dune buggy -- Polaris RZR buggies, automatic transmission, no license needed. You drive with a guide convoy through the dunes. The 2-seater buggy works for couples or a parent-teen pair, and the 4-seater buggy fits the whole family. More details in our dune buggy comparison guide

Age Limits & Safety: What Parents Need to Know

This comes up in almost every booking call we get from families. Here's the actual breakdown:

ActivityMinimum AgeNotes
Dune bashing12 yearsSeatbelt required, can request gentler driving
SandboardingNo minimumTeens do it independently, younger kids need help
Camel riding3 years (with adult)Solo riding from about age 7-8
Quad biking16 years (driver)12+ as passenger with adult driver
Dune buggy16 years (driver)3+ as passenger
Camp activitiesNo minimumHenna, photos, entertainment -- all ages welcome

All our vehicles carry first aid kits, and drivers have desert driving certification. If your teen has a medical condition or gets motion sickness easily, let us know at booking and we'll match you with the right driver. For the full safety rundown, read our desert safari safety guide.

When to Go: Timing Tips for Families

The evening safari (pickup around 3:00-3:30 PM, return by 9:00-9:30 PM) is the best option for teenagers. You get dune bashing in the golden light, outdoor activities at sunset, and dinner under the stars. Morning safaris work too but don't include the camp entertainment or dinner.

Season matters: November through March is ideal -- temperatures sit around 20-28°C, so nobody's overheating during sandboarding. April and October are still fine. If you're visiting in summer (June-September), the evening safari is the only practical option because daytime temperatures hit 45°C+. Our month-by-month timing guide has the full breakdown, and if heat's a concern, our heat management tips will help you prepare.

What Does It Cost? Choosing the Right Package

We run two main packages that work well for families with teenagers:

  • Standard desert safari -- includes hotel pickup, dune bashing, sandboarding, camel ride, camp activities, entertainment, and BBQ dinner. This covers everything in this article.
  • Premium desert safari -- same activities plus VIP seating, longer dune bashing, and upgraded food. If your teen wants the best experience, this is the one.

Both packages include hotel pickup and drop-off from anywhere in Dubai. You can add quad biking or dune buggies at booking. For a detailed price comparison, see our desert safari pricing breakdown.

What Families Actually Say

The number one comment we get from parents after a safari with teenagers: "My kids didn't complain once." That's a high bar for any family activity. Desert safaris work for teens because there's enough variety that nobody gets bored -- adrenaline for the thrill-seekers, photo opportunities for the social media-conscious, and good food for everyone.

If you're trying to plan a full Dubai trip around your teenager's interests, our complete family safari guide covers everything from what to pack to which day of your trip to schedule it. And if you're also considering city attractions, the complete desert safari guide puts it all in context with your other Dubai plans.
