Planning a dune buggy ride in Dubai? Here's what you actually need to pack -- and what your tour operator hands you when you show up. I've been guiding first-timers through the desert for years now, and the biggest mistake people make isn't forgetting something important. It's bringing too much stuff. This checklist will sort you out.
What Your Tour Operator Provides (Don't Pack These)
Good news first: reputable Dubai dune buggy operators supply the expensive safety equipment. When you book with our 2-seater dune buggy or 4-seater options, here's what's included:
- Safety helmet -- DOT-certified, fitted to your head size
- Protective goggles -- sand-proof with anti-fog coating
- Safety briefing -- 15-minute orientation on buggy controls and desert driving
- Bottled water -- essential for desert hydration
- First aid kit -- in lead vehicle for emergencies

What to Wear on a Dune Buggy Ride in Dubai
The desert is harsher on clothes than most people expect. Sand gets into everything, the sun reflects off the dunes from every angle, and temperatures drop fast once the sun goes down. Here's what works:
Upper Body
- Long-sleeve cotton shirt -- protects from sun AND sand spray. Light colors reflect heat. I've seen too many sunburnt arms from people who wore tank tops
- Light jacket or hoodie -- morning and evening rides get surprisingly cool, especially at buggy speeds
- Bandana or neck gaiter -- pull it over your nose during dusty sections. Trust me, you'll want this more than anything else on this list
Lower Body
- Long pants -- jeans, cargo pants, or hiking pants all work fine. Shorts leave your legs exposed to sand and sun, and the buggy seat gets hot
- Closed-toe shoes -- hiking boots or sturdy sneakers. No sandals. Your feet will be buried in sand within minutes of stepping out
- Thick socks -- they prevent blisters from sand getting into shoes. Thin dress socks won't cut it
What NOT to Wear
Skip these (we see at least one person make these mistakes every week):
- Loose scarves -- they can catch in buggy parts
- Flip-flops or open sandals -- you won't last 5 minutes
- Expensive jewelry -- sand scratches everything, and rings slip off sweaty fingers
- White clothing -- turns orange-brown from desert dust. It doesn't wash out easily either
Essential Items to Bring
Pack these in a small backpack. It stays with the support vehicle while you ride:
Sun Protection (Non-Negotiable)
- SPF 50+ sunscreen -- apply 30 minutes before riding, reapply after 2 hours. The reflection off sand nearly doubles your UV exposure
- Lip balm with SPF -- desert air is dry enough to crack your lips within an hour
- Sunglasses with strap -- wear under goggles or during breaks. Without the strap, they'll end up buried in a dune somewhere

Tech & Photos
- Action camera or GoPro -- chest mount works best for buggy POV shots. Head mounts bounce too much on the dunes
- Phone with protective case -- sand kills phones fast. A ziplock bag works in a pinch
- Power bank -- the desert has no outlets, and recording video drains batteries quick
- Small dry bag -- keeps electronics sand-free during stops
Personal Comfort
- Small towel -- for wiping sand from your face during breaks
- Extra water bottle -- 500ml minimum beyond what's provided. In summer, bring a full liter
- Hand sanitizer -- sand gets everywhere. Literally everywhere
- Prescription medications -- bring them in original containers if needed
Seasonal Gear Adjustments
Dubai's desert conditions change dramatically by season, so your packing list should too:
Summer (June-September)
- UV-protective arm sleeves -- they breathe better than cotton in 45°C+ heat
- Cooling towel for breaks -- soak it, wring it, drape it over your neck
- Double the water -- at least 1.5 liters per person
- Morning rides only -- afternoon temperatures regularly exceed 45°C, and the buggy metal gets scorching hot
Winter (November-February)
- Windproof jacket -- buggy speeds create real wind chill, especially in January when mornings sit around 15°C
- Light gloves for morning rides -- your fingers go numb gripping the steering wheel at speed
- Layers -- temperature swings 15°C between sunrise and midday, so you'll be peeling off clothing as the sun comes up

Dune Buggy vs Quad Bike: Does the Gear Differ?
If you're debating between a dune buggy and a quad bike, the gear list is mostly the same -- but there are a few differences worth knowing. Quad bikes are more exposed, so you'll get sandblasted harder and want tighter-fitting clothes. Our dune buggy vs ATV comparison breaks down the full equipment differences. You can also check out our standalone quad bike rides or the desert safari + quad bike combo if you want both experiences.

First-Timer Preparation Tips
A few things that aren't about gear but make a real difference:
- Eat light -- heavy meals + bumpy dunes = discomfort. I've seen people regret that big brunch
- Skip cologne/perfume -- it attracts desert insects. Nobody wants to be the one swatting flies the whole ride
- Secure loose items -- everything in zipped pockets or bags. Phones and wallets fall out of open pockets on every ride
- Charge all devices -- full battery before leaving your hotel
- Arrive 15 minutes early -- gives you time for the safety briefing without feeling rushed

Dune Buggy Rental Options in Dubai
Once you've got your gear sorted, it's time to pick your buggy. We run two self-drive options:
- 2-seater dune buggy -- ideal for couples or solo riders who want a more intense, nimble ride across the dunes
- 4-seater dune buggy -- fits the whole family, wider wheelbase so it feels more stable on steep dunes
Both are automatic Polaris RZR buggies -- no off-road experience needed. Our dune buggy rental comparison guide has the full breakdown on pricing and what's included with each option.
