Dubai Desert Safari Activities: 10 Things You'll Actually Do (2026)

What actually happens on a Dubai desert safari? After running these tours for years, I can tell you: it's a 6-7 hour evening that packs in more than most visitors expect. Your driver picks you up from your hotel around 3:00-3:30 PM, and you're back by 9:30 PM. Between those hours, you'll go through about 10 distinct activities at the Lahbab red dunes area, 45 minutes south of Downtown Dubai.

Here's every activity, roughly in the order you'll experience them. If you're still deciding whether to book, our complete desert safari guide covers pricing, timelines, and FAQs.

1. Red dune bashing

This is the one everyone talks about. Your driver deflates the tires on a Toyota Land Cruiser 4x4, and then you spend 30-45 minutes racing up and down the red sand dunes at Lahbab. Speeds hit around 60-80 km/h on the steeper slopes, and the vehicle tilts at angles that feel impossible. Most people are screaming by the third dune. For more on what to expect, read our detailed dune bashing breakdown -- it covers motion sickness tips and intensity levels too.

Fair warning: if you get carsick easily, take a motion sickness tablet 30 minutes before pickup. Sitting in the front seat helps. The drivers are licensed by Dubai's DTCM and do this route daily, so you're in experienced hands.

2. Sandboarding

Right after dune bashing, the driver stops at a tall dune and hands you a board. You hike up, strap in, and slide down. It's like snowboarding minus the snow and the cold. The sand is softer than you'd think, so falls don't hurt much.

Beginners usually sit down on the board for the first run. By the third attempt, most people are standing. There's no time limit here -- you get about 15-20 minutes to have a go while the sun is still dropping. Bring closed shoes, not sandals, because you'll be hiking through deep sand.

3. Camel riding

At the desert camp, you'll climb onto a camel for a short ride -- usually 10-15 minutes along a marked trail. The mounting and dismounting is the trickiest part: camels stand up back legs first, so you lean forward sharply. Hold the front handle and you'll be fine.

Our camel riding guide for first-timers covers exactly what happens step by step. Kids love this one, and the handlers walk alongside the whole time. Best photos come when the sun is low -- roughly 5:00-5:30 PM in winter months.

4. Quad biking

Not every package includes this, but it's one of the most popular add-ons. You get 15-30 minutes on an ATV, riding across open desert with a guide leading the group. No prior experience needed -- the bikes are automatic and the guides do a safety briefing first.

If you want a longer quad session, the desert safari with quad bike combo gives you 30 minutes of riding plus the full evening safari. Or for a standalone ride, check out the dedicated quad bike experience with 30 or 60 minute sessions.

5. Live shows at the camp

Once the sun drops, the entertainment starts. The schedule runs roughly like this:

  • 7:30 PM -- Tanoura spinning. A performer in a colorful skirt spins for 15 minutes straight without stopping. It's a traditional Sufi-inspired dance, and the colors under the lights are genuinely impressive.
  • 7:50 PM -- Belly dance. A 15-minute performance with live Arabic music backing.
  • 8:10 PM -- Fire show. The most dramatic act -- a performer dances with flaming props in the dark. About 10 minutes.

More detail on each show, including what to expect visually, is in our guide to the live entertainment schedule. Front-row seating goes fast, so grab your spot early if you want photos.

6. BBQ dinner

Dinner is an open buffet served around 8:00-8:30 PM. The spread typically includes grilled lamb, chicken, and beef kebabs, plus hummus, tabbouleh, fattoush, biryani, and fresh bread from a tandoor. Vegetarian options are always available -- expect grilled vegetables, paneer, dal, and salads.

Our full BBQ dinner menu breakdown lists every dish you'll find. The food is halal, and they accommodate allergies if you mention it during booking. Honestly, the biryani is the standout -- most people go back for seconds.

7. Majlis seating

The camp is set up Bedouin-style with low cushions, carpets, and lanterns. It's called a majlis -- Arabic for "sitting place." You'll be here for most of the evening portion, watching shows and eating dinner.

Premium safari packages include VIP sofa seating in a separate area, which is quieter and has dedicated service. The standard majlis is communal, but there's plenty of space -- camps hold 100-200 guests across multiple seating areas.

8. Henna painting

There's a henna station at the camp with artists who paint traditional Arabic patterns on your hands or feet. It's included in the price -- no extra charge. The whole process takes 10-15 minutes for a medium design, and the henna stays visible for 7-10 days depending on your skin.

Tip: get your henna done early in the evening (right when you arrive at camp) so it has time to dry before dinner. Wet henna smudges easily.

9. Arabian costume photos and shisha

The camp has a rack of traditional Arabian outfits -- kanduras for men, abayas and dresses for women. You can put them on and take photos in the desert setting. It's free and makes for decent Instagram content.

Shisha (hookah) is also available at the camp with several flavors -- apple, grape, mint, and mixed fruit are the common ones. It's set up at low tables near the majlis area. Shisha is part of the camp experience, but obviously skip it if you don't smoke.

10. Stargazing

After dinner, around 9:00 PM, the camp lights dim and you can see the night sky properly. Lahbab is far enough from Dubai's light pollution that you'll spot constellations you can't see from the city. The camp staff can point out the major ones -- Orion is easy to find in winter months.

Some visitors skip this because they're tired, which is fair. But if the sky is clear, give it 10 minutes. The desert silence at night is something you don't get anywhere else in Dubai.

Bonus: self-drive dune buggy

If you want something beyond the standard safari, a self-drive 2-seater dune buggy or the 4-seater family dune buggy lets you drive across the dunes yourself. These are Polaris RZR buggies with roll cages and harnesses -- fully automatic, no license required. Sessions run 30 or 60 minutes. It's a different kind of rush from being a passenger during dune bashing.

Which activities are in which package?

The standard desert safari includes dune bashing, sandboarding, camel riding, all the camp activities (henna, costumes, shisha, stargazing), live shows, and BBQ dinner. That covers 9 of the 10 activities above.

Quad biking is usually a paid add-on or comes bundled in combo packages. Dune buggies are booked separately.

For families with young kids, our family desert safari guide covers age limits and which activities work for different ages. Teens 12+ can do everything on the list -- see our teenager-specific activity guide for honest ratings from actual teens.

Picking the right time of year matters too. November through March is ideal -- cooler temperatures, more comfortable evenings. Our month-by-month timing guide breaks down what to expect each season.
