Things to Do in Dubai with Kids: Family Activities by Age (2026)

Traveling to Dubai with kids? I've helped hundreds of families plan their trips, and here's what I've learned: Dubai is actually one of the most family-friendly destinations in the world - if you know where to go and when.

This guide covers activities for all ages, from toddlers in strollers to bored teenagers. I'll tell you what's worth the money, what to skip, and the practical details parents actually need.

Best for Toddlers & Young Kids (Ages 3-7)

Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo

Located inside Dubai Mall, this is a lifesaver with young kids. The tunnel walk is free (you can see plenty from outside), but the paid experience is worth it if your kids love marine life. The touch tank where they can feel starfish and sea cucumbers? Always a hit.

Practical tip: Go right when the mall opens (10am). By noon, school groups arrive and it gets crowded. Stroller-friendly throughout.

Dubai Miracle Garden

Over 50 million flowers arranged in incredible shapes - hearts, castles, a life-size Emirates plane made of flowers. Kids under 3 enter free. The paths are paved and flat, perfect for strollers. There's a small butterfly garden inside that young kids love.

When to visit: Open November to May only. Go in the morning - by afternoon it gets hot and crowded. For the best time to visit Dubai overall, check our weather guide for Dubai.

KidZania Dubai

An entire mini-city where kids can "work" as doctors, firefighters, pilots, and more. They earn play money and learn about professions. Ages 4-14 work best here. Warning: you'll need at least 4 hours - kids never want to leave.

Best for Older Kids & Tweens (Ages 8-12)

Burj Khalifa

The world's tallest building is impressive for any age, but 8+ is when kids really appreciate it. Book "At the Top" tickets in advance (levels 124-125) - the views are identical to the more expensive SKY experience (level 148), and you save 200+ AED per person.

Tip: Sunset tickets are best - you see Dubai in daylight, at sunset, and lit up at night. The whole experience takes about 90 minutes including queues.

Desert Safari with Kids

This is where Dubai gets exciting. Dune bashing is essentially a roller coaster on sand - kids 8+ usually love it (some younger kids find it scary). The Premium Desert Safari Dubai includes:

  • Dune bashing in a Land Cruiser
  • Sandboarding (free, staff will help kids)
  • Short camel ride (perfect photo opportunity)
  • BBQ dinner at a desert camp
  • Live entertainment (belly dancing, Tanoura show)

If you're looking for the standard package instead, the Desert Safari Dubai covers the same activities at a lower price point - still great for families.

For a detailed breakdown of what to expect, read our complete family desert safari guide. You might also want to check our full desert safari packages for pricing, timing, and options.

Best for Teenagers (Ages 13-17)

Teenagers are the trickiest to please, but Dubai has genuinely cool activities they won't roll their eyes at.

Dune Buggy Adventures

Teens 16+ with a driver's license can drive their own dune buggy. The 4-seater dune buggy is perfect for families - one parent drives while the whole family experiences it together. Teens find this way cooler than being a passenger. Couples or smaller groups might prefer the 2-seater dune buggy instead.

For more teen-specific activities, check our guide on desert safari experiences for teenagers.

Quad Biking

Teens who want something more hands-on than dune bashing will love quad biking in the Dubai desert. Sessions run 30 or 60 minutes, and the instructors keep groups small so everyone gets proper attention. Morning and afternoon slots are available - mornings are cooler and quieter.

Dubai Frame

A giant picture frame with glass floors and views of old and new Dubai. Teenagers love the glass floor photo opportunities and the Instagram-worthy views. Less crowded than Burj Khalifa and about half the price.

VR Park at Dubai Mall

One of the world's largest virtual reality parks. Teenagers can spend hours here on VR games, virtual roller coasters, and escape rooms. It's in the mall, so parents can shop while teens play.

Private City Tour: The Easy Way to See Everything

With kids, a private Dubai city tour makes life so much easier than public transport or taxis. Here's why families love it:

  • Car seats available - just request when booking
  • Flexible timing - if kids need a break, no problem
  • Air-conditioned vehicle - essential in Dubai's heat
  • Local guide - knows kid-friendly restaurants and bathroom stops
  • Door-to-door pickup - no navigating with strollers

The tour covers all the highlights in one day: Old Dubai (spice souks, gold souks), Dubai Marina, Palm Jumeirah, and stops at major landmarks. The guide adjusts the pace based on your family's energy levels. For more on what's included, read our guide on top Dubai city tour attractions.

Considering Abu Dhabi too? The Abu Dhabi City Tour is equally family-friendly and includes Ferrari World - teenagers especially love this. Our guide on Dubai vs Abu Dhabi helps you decide if you have time for one or both.

Practical Tips for Families

Best Time to Visit

November to March is ideal - temperatures are comfortable (20-30°C). Avoid summer (June-August) unless you're mainly doing indoor activities. School holidays (Christmas, February half-term) are busier but manageable.

December and January are the peak months. You'll see temperatures around 22-25°C during the day, which is perfect for outdoor activities like desert safaris and beach time. If you're visiting during Ramadan (dates shift each year), restaurants still serve food in malls and hotels, but street-side cafes close during daylight hours. It's actually a good time to visit because crowds thin out and some attractions run special rates.

Getting Around

Dubai is not walkable with kids. Options:

  • Private tour: Best for sightseeing days
  • Taxis: Plentiful and cheap, but no car seats
  • Metro: Clean and air-conditioned, but limited reach
  • Rental car: Good for families staying 5+ days

One thing to know about Dubai taxis: they're metered and honest, but drivers don't carry car seats. If you've got a toddler, that's a problem. The Dubai Metro is spotless and has a dedicated women-and-children cabin at the front of each train, which is a nice touch during rush hour. Just keep in mind the metro doesn't reach JBR beach, Palm Jumeirah, or the desert, so you'll still need taxis or a tour for those spots.

What to Pack

  • Sunscreen (UAE sun is intense)
  • Light jacket (malls and restaurants are heavily air-conditioned)
  • Modest clothing for mosque visits (women cover shoulders/knees)
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Reusable water bottles (refill stations are common)

If you're planning a desert safari, we've got a detailed what to wear on a desert safari guide that covers clothing for kids too.

A few extras worth throwing in the bag: a portable phone charger (you'll be taking a lot of photos), a small first aid kit with band-aids and antiseptic wipes, and wet wipes - loads of them. Sand gets everywhere during desert activities, and your kids will thank you at the BBQ dinner when they can clean their hands without finding a tap. Bring a hat with a strap for younger kids; regular caps blow off during dune bashing.

Food with Kids

Dubai is one of the easiest places to eat with kids. Every mall has food courts with familiar options (McDonald's, pizza, pasta). Most restaurants are child-friendly with high chairs available. Arabic food is generally mild and kid-approved - hummus, grilled chicken, flatbreads. For more on what's served at the desert camp, read our desert safari BBQ dinner guide.

Staying Connected

Buy a local SIM card at the airport (du or Etisalat counters are right at arrivals). A tourist SIM costs around 100 AED and gives you data for a week. You'll need it for Google Maps, booking confirmations, and keeping the kids occupied during taxi rides. Free Wi-Fi is available at most malls and hotels, but it's slow and unreliable for video calls. If you're here for more than a week, a 200 AED plan with more data is the better deal.

Safety Notes

Dubai is one of the safest cities I've worked in. Petty crime is extremely rare, and you won't feel uneasy walking around with kids at any hour. That said, the sun is the real danger. Kids dehydrate faster than adults, and sunburn can happen in under 20 minutes during midday. We always tell families to carry water everywhere and take shade breaks every 45 minutes during outdoor activities. The desert camp has shaded seating areas, but the dune bashing and sandboarding happen in direct sun.

Budget Tips for Families

Dubai doesn't have to drain your wallet. Here's how families save money without missing out on the good stuff.

Free and Low-Cost Activities

Not everything in Dubai costs a fortune. These are genuinely free:

  • Dubai Fountain show - runs every 30 minutes from 6pm. Stand by the waterfront at Dubai Mall for the best view. Kids love the music and water jets.
  • JBR Beach - public access, no entry fee. Bring your own towels and snacks. The Walk at JBR has street performers on weekends.
  • Dubai Mall window walk - the aquarium tunnel is visible from the mall for free. You don't need a ticket to see the main tank.
  • Gold and Spice Souks - free to browse, and kids find the spice market fascinating. Just don't let them touch the saffron.
  • Al Seef Heritage District - a recreated old Dubai village along the creek. Flat paths, waterfront cafes, and photo spots.

Where to Save Money

Here are the specific moves that save families the most:

  • Book activities in advance: Walk-up prices at Burj Khalifa and theme parks are 20-30% higher than online prices.
  • Combo deals: If you're doing both a city tour and a desert safari, ask about bundle pricing. Most operators offer a discount when you book multiple activities together.
  • Eat at food courts: A family of four can eat well at Dubai Mall's food court for 100-150 AED. A sit-down restaurant in the same mall will run 300-500 AED for the same family.
  • Skip the branded souvenirs: The airport duty-free shops and mall gift stores charge premium prices. Pick up souvenirs at the old souks in Deira - same quality, a third of the price, and your kids get a more authentic experience.
  • Use the Entertainer app: It offers buy-one-get-one deals at restaurants, attractions, and water parks across Dubai. The annual subscription pays for itself within two or three uses.

Spending Priorities

If you're working with a fixed budget and need to choose, here's what I'd prioritize based on what families tell us after their trips:

  1. Desert safari - this is the one thing every family remembers. Don't skip it.
  2. Private city tour - worth every dirham when you've got kids. The convenience alone saves you hours of stress.
  3. One theme park day - pick the one that matches your kids' ages (Legoland for younger, IMG Worlds for older).
  4. Burj Khalifa - great, but honestly the view from Dubai Frame is 80% as good at half the cost.

Sample Family Itinerary

Day 1: Landmarks

  • Morning: Dubai Mall + Aquarium
  • Afternoon: Burj Khalifa (book sunset slot)
  • Evening: Dinner at Dubai Mall

Day 2: Desert Adventure

  • Morning: Pool time at hotel
  • Afternoon/Evening: Desert Safari (pickup around 3pm, return by 9pm)

Day 3: City Tour

  • Full-day private city tour - Old Dubai, souks, Dubai Frame, Marina

Day 4: Theme Parks or Beach

  • Options: IMG Worlds of Adventure, Legoland, or beach day at JBR

Dubai with kids is genuinely fun - it's a city built for tourists with solid infrastructure, safety, and activities for every age. The key is pacing yourself (don't over-schedule), staying hydrated, and embracing the air conditioning. Your kids will love it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Dubai safe for families with young children?

Yes, Dubai is one of the safest cities you'll visit with kids. Crime rates are very low, public spaces are well-maintained, and there's a strong police presence in tourist areas. The biggest safety concerns for families aren't crime-related - they're heat and sun exposure. Keep sunscreen on hand, stay hydrated, and plan outdoor activities for mornings or late afternoons. Malls, indoor attractions, and hotels are air-conditioned and comfortable year-round. We've had families with kids as young as 18 months join our city tours without any issues.

What's the minimum age for desert safari activities?

Most operators set the minimum age for dune bashing at 3-4 years old, but we'd honestly recommend it for kids 6 and older. Younger children can find the bumpy ride overwhelming, and some get motion sick. Camel rides, sandboarding, and the BBQ dinner at the camp are fine for all ages. If you've got a mix of ages, the standard desert safari works well because younger kids can skip the dune bashing and meet the group at camp. Talk to us when booking and we'll sort out the logistics.

How many days do families need in Dubai?

Four to five days is the sweet spot for most families. That gives you time for a desert day, a city tour day, a theme park or beach day, and a day for Dubai Mall and landmarks - with enough downtime so nobody melts down. If you're adding Abu Dhabi (which is worth it for Ferrari World alone), tack on one more day. Families who try to cram everything into three days usually end up exhausted, and the kids stop cooperating by day two. Build in pool time at the hotel every day - your kids will need it to recharge.

Do I need to book activities in advance or can I decide on the spot?

Book the big things in advance: Burj Khalifa tickets, desert safari, city tour, and theme parks. These either sell out or cost more at the door. Burj Khalifa sunset slots in particular go fast during peak season - I've seen them sell out a week ahead in December. For everything else - malls, beaches, souks, the Dubai Fountain - just show up. You don't need reservations for most restaurants unless it's a Friday brunch at a popular hotel. A good rule of thumb: if it has a ticket, book online. If it's free entry, wing it.
